Product Description

Plasticizer Series: DiOctyl Phthalate (DOP / DEHP)

 1. Introduction to DOP / DEHP

DOP stands for DiOctyl Phthalate, also known as DEHP (Di(2ethylhexyl) phthalate).

It belongs to the phthalate family of plasticizers.
Widely used in PVC manufacturing due to its flexibility enhancing properties.
Chemical formula:
CAS Number: 117817
Appearance: Clear, colorless to slightly yellowish liquid, with low volatility and mild odor.
Functions by reducing intermolecular forces between PVC chains, improving flexibility and processability.

 2. Applications of DOP in PVC Manufacturing

Used in flexible PVC products such as:
  1. Electrical wire insulation
  2. Cables and wiring systems
  3. Hoses and tubing
  4. Flooring and roofing membranes

Applied in consumer goods including:
  1. Footwear and upholstery
  2. Packaging films and containers
  3. Toys (Note: restricted in export markets)
Common in industrial applications like:
  1. Automotive interiors (dashboards, seating covers)
  2. Conveyor belts and industrial hoses

Traditionally used in medical devices such as:
  1. IV tubes
  2. Blood bags (now being replaced in many countries)

Also found in construction materials such as:
  1. Window profiles and door seals
  2. Waterproofing membranes
  3. Flexible piping systems

  1. Advantages of Using DOP
Costeffective: One of the most economical plasticizers available.
Good performance: Enhances flexibility, elongation, and impact resistance in PVC.
Low volatility: Does not evaporate easily during processing or longterm use.
Excellent electrical insulation: Makes it ideal for use in cable jacketing and wiring.
Good lowtemperature flexibility: Maintains pliability even in cold environments.
High compatibility with PVC: Easily integrates into standard PVC formulations.
Established supply chain: Widely available in Chinese chemical markets.
Proven formulation knowledge: Long history of use ensures reliability and ease of integration.

 4. Disadvantages and Regulatory Considerations

Classified as a Category 1B Reproductive Toxicant under EU REACH regulation.
Banned in children's toys and childcare articles in the EU and US if present above 0.1% concentration.
Can migrate from PVC over time, especially when exposed to heat or solvents.
Not easily biodegradable, raising concerns about environmental persistence.
Limited UV and heat stability, may degrade under prolonged exposure.
International buyers increasingly require nonphthalate content, limiting market access for DOP based products.
Export oriented manufacturers in China must consider transitioning to safer alternatives.

 5. Conclusion

DOP remains a key plasticizer in China's PVC industry due to:

Costefficiency
Availability
Compatibility with existing production methods
