Stearic acid is is lump,flake,powder or granular solid,insoluble in water, soluble in   benzene,toluene,chloroform,tetrachloromethane,carbon,sulfide,
ethanol,acetone .
The acid is a white waxy substance. Salts and other derivatives of stearic acid are called stearates. This acid has a pungent oily smell. Stearic acid can be obtained by saponification of fats and oils. Triglycerides in oils undergo saponification under the action of hot water. The resulting mixture of compounds should be distilled to obtain the pure acid. However, stearic acid in the market is actually a mixture of stearic acid and palmitic acid. When it comes to the use of stearic acid, it is important as a surfactant and emollient due to the presence of polar head groups that can attach to metal cations. It also has non-polar chains, making it soluble in organic solvents.

Applications
It is widely used for cosmetics, plastic cold resistant plasticizer, release agent, stabilizer, surfactant, rubber vulcanization accelerator, waterproofing agent, polishing agent, metal soap, metal mineral flotation agent, softener and other organic chemicals.
Also used in the manufacture of PVC plastic pipe, sheet, profiles, thin films. PVC heat stabilizer
